THE LATEST FASHIONS – BRING SOME INTO YOUR HOME!
By Kendall Carre

One day you’re in…the next day you’re out…or so it goes in the world of fashion (and according to show host and super model Heidi Klum from the popular Bravo Channel’s Project Runway)! Fortunately interior home fashion trends tend to transcend the times from season to season so your traditional, contemporary, eclectic, or whatever favorite furniture style should endure for years to come.

Like most, your personal style or your home’s basic design could benefit from some of the fashion runway’s latest trends…albeit within moderation. Michael Kors may be showing 16-inch mini skirts with five-inch heels, but what actually makes it to your favorite department store is a much more realistic version of that fashion trend.

In interior design the leaders constantly look towards the fashion industry for inspiration and trends. Almost inevitably what is big on the catwalk will end up in some way in your home.

One of this summer’s hottest trends is bright colors. Forget black, brown and beige… think coral, aqua, yellow, berry, and lime green. A little too much brightness for your color palette? Don’t worry, you can inject small amounts of color in your existing neutral backdrop and feel the power of color and light. “Just adding pillows, accessories and maybe even a couple key pieces of art can change the look of your home,” says Nicole Hedrick, Creative Director for Newport Beach, California-based Ambrosia Interior Design. Of course paint is an affordable way to add color any time of year. Painting one focal wall is all it takes to transform your space. “The summer months are all about a brighter more fun atmosphere, why shouldn’t your home reflect that same attitude?”

“And once the summer months are gone, you just pack away (or paint over) your colorful items and switch to whatever colors make you warm during the cooler months,” adds Hedrick.

According to InStyle magazine’s April issue, stylized florals are also popular this season. Of course the easiest way to add flowers to your home is to bring in live arrangements, but for something more lasting why not wallpaper your powder room in a bold floral pattern? “There are so many exciting designs available today that make a dramatic statement,” says Hedrick. “Bathrooms are all hard surfaces so we love adding wallpaper, art, and some terrific rugs and towels to soften the space. ”Another awesome trend in fashion this season is global-inspired items. Global doesn’t necessarily mean ethnic, but anything from another location around the world can transcend the look. Fabrics, artifacts and small furniture pieces that can be switched with your existing pieces can be simple and fun. “A quick trip to Pier 1 Imports, World Market or your local antique shop could uncover all kinds of treasures,” says Hedrick.

The inspiration for incorporating any of these trends (or all of them) may be as close as your own closet or your favorite fashion magazine. The investment doesn’t have to be the magnitude of a pair of Manolo Blahnik’s, an H&M version will do just fine. Fashion trends come and go, but knowing what you like and how to incorporate those things into your home is something you should feel comfortable experimenting with.

So throw caution into the summer wind and “make it work!” For more information about Ambrosia Interior Design, you can call 714 573-3855 or visit www.ambrosiainteriors.com
