The roots of Solatube International,
Inc., originator of the tubular skylight, date back to the 1980s and an
Australian inventor. Working alone, the inventor developed a breakthrough
in natural lighting for homes and commercial buildings.
The system he invented is
comprised of a reflector located in a roof-mounted dome, that collects
light and directs it down a highly reflective cylinder to a light diffuser
in the ceiling that looks like a standard light fixture. The tubing can
be angled around attic obstructions for easy installation. Its interior
is lined with a highly reflective surface that reflects light down the
tube as it travels the distance to the ceiling diffuser fixture.
Construction of the system
and optimal alignment in installation assure that maximum light is transmitted
to the interior site. Currently, the Solatube product line includes a
10 inch, 14 inch, and 16 inch diameter system, with options for lighting
and ventilation kits.
These options are incorporated
into the Solatube design to provide the functionality and practicality
that consumers need, making the need for numerous different fixtures in
the ceiling unnecessary. All systems are suitable for residential and
commercial use. Solatube is the largest manufacturer of tubular skylights
in the world.
