Cal-Pac Roofing was a industry leader in Stone coated steel roofing, since 1978. The founders were Mel Egan and Alex South. The company specialized in re-roofing existing light framed houses, which usually had a shake roof, with a New Zealand manufactured stone coated steel tile. Over the next 15 years Mel and Alex grew the business to 23 offices throughout California and formed a joint venture with the New Zealand manufacturer to build a manufacturing plant in Southern California. After the sudden death of Mel Egan in 1990. Alex South carried on the business on his own for 3 years and eventually relinquished his interests in both the manufacturing and the contracting companies. The New Zealand based partners took over the factory 100% and the contracting entities were closed. San Diego continued to be served by one of the entities that evolved from the change, until 1993 when California Pacific Home Improvement was formed by Brian Winch, one of the founding Managers of Cal-Pac Roofing.
